How To Measure Windows For Blinds And Curtains?

Taking accurate measurements of window dimensions requires some essential supplies. We have also recruited these basic supplies that will assist in your DIY project. Basically, there are two types of mounting techniques for window blinds, mounting the blinds outside or inside of the window. But for window blinds, we usually install them inside of the window frame due to their slat structure.

Taking window measurements for blind installation is somewhat different from curtains.

Inside Window Mounting

In this blind mounting technique, we fix the blind inside of the window frame.

Outside Window Mounting

In this blind mounting method, we install the blind outside of the window frame.

• If you’re going to mount the blind inside of the window frame, you need to take accurate measurements from the inside of the window.
• Estimate the precise width between both extremities of the window frame by using measuring tape.
• To take the precise width of the overall frame, you can divide the window frame into three portions, top, middle, and bottom of the window.
• Now take the width measurements from each portion individually and note it down on the paper. Firstly take from the top portion then the middle portion and at the end from the bottom portion.
• Similarly, take the height of the frame by dividing the window into three equal portions, right, left, and middle portion.
• Take the height of all portions from the upper extremity to the lower extremity (sill).
• Reduce the ¼ inch from the overall width of the window frame to prevent the overlapping of the blind on the wall.
• Similarly, reduce the ¼ inch from the total height of the window.

• If you’re thinking about mounting blinds outside of the window, the process is somewhat different.
• While taking measurements from outside, you need to add the frame of the window or molding in total width and height.
• After taking measurements, you need to add a minimum of 3 inches in total width and 3 inches in total height.
• However, for vertical blinds, you should add 4 inches to the overall width and 3 inches to the overall height.

Taking window measurements for hanging the curtains is a tricky project as compared to window blinds.

• Measuring the width of the window from the right edge to the left edge with the help of measuring tape is recommendable.
• After taking the total width, you need to sum 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 inches to each extremity of the window.
• If you want to place a rod above the window trim, this addition of extra inches into the width is necessary to determine curtain rod length.
• Moreover, if you want to place a rod below the window trim, there is no need to add extra inches to the measured width.
• Placing a rod above the window trim is the most common style. But it must be ensured that the rod should be fixed 5-6 inches on the upper window edge.
• For taking the perfect window length, you can utilize a measuring tape to measure the distance from the top to the bottom of the window.
• The addition of extra inches to the total window length depends upon your style of placing the rod.

In addition, you need to get precise measurements for curtains’ total length and width. If you want to hang eyelet or pencil-pleated curtains, multiply the window width by a factor of two. However, for tab-top window covering, you need to multiply the window width by 1.5. For curtain length, you can follow any design such as floor length, sill-length or puddle, etc. You can adjust the curtain length according to any of the personalized styles.
